A blend of the 2015 and 2016 vintages, the NV Côtes du Rhône S M checks in as the same equal parts Grenache and Syrah raised in tank and barrel. A huge nose of cassis, ground black pepper, garrigue, and olive tapenade gives way to a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has good acidity, building tannin, a seamless, light texture, and a great finish. It's a singular wine that has a big kiss of Northern Rhône Syrah with a touch of the rounded, sexy, opulent style of the south. It's going to drink nicely for a decade.

A blend of 50% Syrah from the Northern Rhône with 50% Grenache from the Southern Rhône, the NV Vin de France SM Second Edition is a fascinating wine, combining smoky, peppery, herbal notes with ripe black cherries. Full-bodied, plush and velvety, Vignon allows that it's "more 2016 than 2015" in style, but no matter how you characterize it, it's a lovely, complex wine.

I love the 2021 El Puño Garnacha, which was produced in a similar way as the 2020, only with a slightly higher percentage of wine in barrel (50% versus 40%), but the oak goes unnoticeable. It has notes of blood orange and a citric touch of freshness that makes it very showy, aromatic and attractive. It has 14.5%, a pH of 3.5 and 5.1 grams of acidity, still parameters that denote good freshness, acidity and balance. This is a serious, complex, elegant and austere Garnacha. 4,900 bottles were filled in April 2023.

Fresh red cherries and spiced berries on the nose with some grilled herbs. Juicy and bright on the palate with fine, dusty tannins on the linear, medium-bodied palate. Lots of crunch here with sappy red berry fruit that extends into the finish. A succulent and nimble garnacha that makes you want to reach for a second glass.

From clay-calcareous soils, with large presence of Galestro, of Castellina in Chianti, Sangiovese, with small participation of territorial, even remote as the Round Leaf and Pugnitello. Dogwood on the nose, hints of lemongrass and tangerine, then eucalyptus. Savory sip, with citrusy return and small fruits notes.

This is red-fruited and a little earthy with notes of chocolate and hibiscus. Ripe and mellow with a medium to full body and grainy tannin structure. Complete and attractive with savory notes at the end. From organically grown grapes.

Falstaff

Rich ruby red with brightening edges. On the nose it has an inviting aroma of black cherry, ripe raspberry, some savouriness in the aftertaste. Mouth-filling on the palate with precise fruit, vivid tannin, persistent, somewhat drying finish, still young.

One of Campania's flagship reds, the Feudi di San Gregorio 2017 Taurasi Riserva Piano di Montevergine bears some of the weight and softness of this infamously hot and dry growing season. The fruit comes from a beautiful site with volcanic sand and clay soils. The wine later ages in oak for 24 months (and 20,000 bottles are made). This edition is more open-knit and accessible compared to some of the recent past releases we may have set aside for long cellar aging.
