Lorsque le critique œnologique Jay S. Miller a dégusté le millésime 2007 du vin rouge 'Selectus' en 2011 pour le compte du guide Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, il a indiqué que quelques années supplémentaires en cave feraient le plus grand bien à cette cuvée. C’est désormais chose faite et le temps a joué en sa faveur. Le 'Selectus' est maintenant doté d’une maturité parfaite et est prêt à se mettre à table. Les cépages syrah, cabernet, merlot et petit verdot se sont magnifiquement unis. Les sols calcaires des vignobles prêtent au vin une minéralité marquée et la dimension boisée encadre le tableau dans une grande harmonie. Nous avons là du grand art viticole et le résultat d’une sélection rigoureuse. D’où le nom de la cuvée : 'Selectus'. Celle-ci est vinifiée uniquement dans les années où le vigneron est sûr de la qualité des raisins. Le millésime 2007 en fait partie !

The Bodega’s flagship is called Selectus: no 2006 was made but the 2007 Selectus was worth the wait. A blend of 30% Syrah, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, it was aged for 18 months in new French oak. Smoky oak, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, lavender, and assorted black fruits lead to a suave, dense, succulent offering that features outstanding volume and a 45-second finish. Give it another 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it from 2014 to 2027.

A blend of the 2015 and 2016 vintages, the NV Côtes du Rhône S M checks in as the same equal parts Grenache and Syrah raised in tank and barrel. A huge nose of cassis, ground black pepper, garrigue, and olive tapenade gives way to a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has good acidity, building tannin, a seamless, light texture, and a great finish. It's a singular wine that has a big kiss of Northern Rhône Syrah with a touch of the rounded, sexy, opulent style of the south. It's going to drink nicely for a decade.

A blend of 50% Syrah from the Northern Rhône with 50% Grenache from the Southern Rhône, the NV Vin de France SM Second Edition is a fascinating wine, combining smoky, peppery, herbal notes with ripe black cherries. Full-bodied, plush and velvety, Vignon allows that it's "more 2016 than 2015" in style, but no matter how you characterize it, it's a lovely, complex wine.

This wine has seen several name changes (from Il Toro to RomiTòro and now Romitorio). The Castello Romitorio 2021 Romitorio is a hearty, full-bodied red blend with the muscle and power to mimic the beautiful Sandro Chia drawing of a raging bull on the front label. Fundamentally, this wine shows an all-Maremma spirit with rich concentration, big fruit weight and a whole range of savory and black fruit aromas. This wine is a delight to drink; it has a soft texture and is just raring to go straight out of the gate. This is one of Italy's ultimate value wines.

A fresh and crunchy red with dark cherries, currants, crushed flowers and a little bit of chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied. So lively and bright with textured, chalky tannins. Attractive juiciness with cherries and red spice undertones. Mineral and savory with some salinity at the end.

I love the 2021 El Puño Garnacha, which was produced in a similar way as the 2020, only with a slightly higher percentage of wine in barrel (50% versus 40%), but the oak goes unnoticeable. It has notes of blood orange and a citric touch of freshness that makes it very showy, aromatic and attractive. It has 14.5%, a pH of 3.5 and 5.1 grams of acidity, still parameters that denote good freshness, acidity and balance. This is a serious, complex, elegant and austere Garnacha. 4,900 bottles were filled in April 2023.

Fresh red cherries and spiced berries on the nose with some grilled herbs. Juicy and bright on the palate with fine, dusty tannins on the linear, medium-bodied palate. Lots of crunch here with sappy red berry fruit that extends into the finish. A succulent and nimble garnacha that makes you want to reach for a second glass.

The 2020 Discovery Cabernet Sauvignon is so attractively aromatic, with dusted cassis, salted licorice, bramble and bay leaf. The wine is fulsome and exact, precise, mouthfilling and satisfying, with an unbroken flow of interwoven flavor and tannin through the finish. It's long, lingering, perfectly formed. A beautiful wine.

Formerly marketed as Eisenberg, the 2017 Blaufränkisch Vom Blauen Schiefer offers a fascinating pure and aromatic bouquet of small, dark and concentrated berries and cherries intertwined with floral and refreshing slatey aromas. Full-bodied, intense and with perfectly ripe fruit and accordingly ripe and mellow yet still tackling tannins, this is a juicy, coolish, refined and elegant yet tensioned Blaufränkisch of class and style. The Eisenberg has always been one of my red favorites from all Austria, and the 2017 Vom Blauen demonstrates why. This is simply an extraordinary and authentic Blaufränkisch from the blue (and sometimes green) slate soils of the Eisenberg area. Aged in large oak vessels for 2.5 years. 13% alcohol.
